If you're shopping for a quality watch, you've probably seen the term "Sapphire Crystal" thrown around. But what does it actually mean? And why should you care?
The short answer: Your watch crystal is what you'll see every single time you check the time, and it's also the part most vulnerable to damage. The wrong choice means a scratched-up face in a year. The right choice means a flawless view for decades.
What Is Sapphire Crystal?
Despite the name, sapphire crystal isn't glass at all — it's a synthetic sapphire (corundum) grown in a lab. It ranks 9 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, right behind diamond.
That means only diamond can scratch it.
Your keys won't. Your wedding ring won't. Door frames won't. Dropping it on concrete might chip the case or crack the crystal (sapphire is hard but brittle), but everyday wear? It stays pristine.
Mineral Glass: The Budget Standard
Most watches under $200 use mineral glass — basically tempered glass with some hardening treatment. It's okay, but it scratches at a Mohs hardness of 5-6. That means common dust and sand can scratch it.
Think about that: the same silica that's in beach sand, construction dust, keys and even pocket lint eventually can leave permanent marks on a mineral crystal over time.
The Real Cost Difference
Here's what most watch companies don't tell you:
Mineral glass adds about $5-10 to manufacturing cost
Sapphire crystal adds about $20-40
That's it. The difference in production cost is pocket change. Yet many brands charge $200-500 more for the "sapphire version" of the same watch.

What About AR Coating?
Many sapphire crystals also get anti-reflective (AR) coating — sometimes on the inside, sometimes both sides. This reduces glare and makes the dial pop. The tradeoff? AR coatings can scratch or wear off over time (they're softer than the sapphire underneath).
Our approach: we use single-sided AR coating on the inside of the crystal. You get the glare reduction without worrying about exterior coating wear.
The Bottom Line
If you're investing more than $200 in a watch, it should have sapphire crystal. Full stop. Mineral glass at that price point is a compromise you'll regret the first time you catch a micro-scratch in just the wrong light.
A sapphire crystal watch looks new for years. A mineral glass watch looks "lived in" after a few months. That's the difference.
